Google Now launches on iOS

Google’s revolutionary Google Now service is finally available on iOS. After Google chairman Eric Schmidt mistakenly claimed Google Now for iOS had been submitted to Apple for review, it was unclear when the exciting feature might finally arrive on iPhones and iPads. The wait wasn’t very long, as it turns out — Google Now is available immediately as an update to Google’s search application for iOS. Google Now is an intelligent assistant feature that automatically presents users with information based on location, search history and more, without any action required by the user. Google bans Facebook and others from updating apps outside of Google Play

Google has changed the rules of its Google Play Store to put an end to the practice of developers updating their apps through their own means rather than the official Google Play channel. That will force Facebook and other apps to get in line or risk expulsion from the official Android app store.

Facebook quietly announced a few weeks ago that its official Android app could have updates pushed directly from its servers rather than having users need to update the app in Google Play. It was not the first company to choose such a course, but it was the most high-profile. Since then, Google has instituted a new policy that states:

"An app downloaded from Google Play may not modify, replace or update its own APK binary code using any method other than Google Play's update mechanism."

Android developers can no longer have their APK (Android program files) auto-update code. The only way to have apps automatically updated will be if users choose to enable the feature in the Play Store settings
