What’s Different? Samsung Galaxy Note 2 vs. Galaxy Note

When the first Samsung Galaxy Note was released last year, I had visions of the old Dell Streak and I wondered why on Earth someone would want a smartphone with a display in excess of five inches. Well, it turns out that the original Note has been quite the resounding success and Samsung followed up with the Note II. But what’s different between the two? How much of an upgrade is it?

It starts with the screen. The original Note had a 5.3-inch 800×1280 (285ppi) Sumer AMOLED touchscreen, whereas the new Note II has a larger 5.5-inch 720×1280 display. It’s physically bigger but actually has fewer pixels (267ppi). This is because they’ve changed the aspect ratio, which changes the outward dimensions of the phone too. The new Note II is a little longer than the original (151.1mm vs 146.9mm), but it’s actually narrower (80.5mm vs 83mm) and thinner (9.4mm vs 9.7mm).

The overall design borrows a lot from the Galaxy S III too, so you lose the textured back of the Galaxy Note in favor of a slippery “river rock” like back on the Note II.

The new Note II is more powerful with a quad-core 1.6GHz processor compared to the 1.4GHz dual core in the original, though it retains the same 2GB of RAM. The Note II ships with Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, whereas the original shipped with Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, though a Jelly Bean upgrade is available. Naturally, they both use Samsung’s TouchWiz UI too.

The S Pen smart stylus is still here–as will be the case with the entire Note lineup–but it’s gained a few tricks, like Wacom-style “hovering” functionality. The Note II does have some additional features though, like a custom menu for one-handed operation of the dial pad, as well as some features borrowed from the S3, like Smart Stay. The battery is bigger (3100mAh vs 2500mAh) too, helping to improve battery life.

If you already have the original Samsung Galaxy Note, there isn’t as much of a motivation to upgrade to the Note II. However, if you’re looking to enter the phablet arena for the first time, I’d skip the OG Note and head straight to the Galaxy Note II. It’s a beast of a device.

iOS 6 fixes bug that let stolen iPhones receive iMessage texts

A problem with Apple's messaging app has finally be fixed, a source tells The Next Web.

An iMessage security hole discovered earlier this year has reportedly been patched in iOS 6.

Revealed in February, the bug allowed texts through iMessage to continue to appear even after the phone's account information had been wiped, the SIM card deactivated, or the password changed. This meant that a stolen iPhone could still receive text messages intended for the device's owner.

The Next Web reported that a source with knowledge of the matter said that the issue was resolved in iOS 6 after Apple pushed through several new checks for iMessage. One critical tweak requires users who change their Apple account ID to re-enter the password to use iMessage.

Further, people whose iPhones are lost or stolen are now protected against the old bug.

 Inserting the SIM card in a new phone with the same associated number or remotely wiping the phone automatically prevents the iPhone from receiving texts through iMessage, TNW added. Change your Apple ID password, and all of your iOS devices will now ask for the new password before enabling iMessage.

In February, an Apple spokeswoman said the flaw was an "extremely rare situation that occurred when a retail employee did not follow the correct service procedure and used their personal SIM to help a customer who did not have a working SIM."

Windows Phone 8 and Blackberry 10: Which One Are You Rooting For?

Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 is here, and is actually doing reasonably well during its first few days on the market. That said, there is some very real competition in the mobile market that would love to fight Microsoft for the “3rd place” position in the smartphone market, this includes Mozilla with Firefox OS and RIM with BB10.

Do either of these platforms have a chance against Microsoft? Honestly, Firefox OS is Mozilla’s first attempt at an OS, so it’s reach in the beginning will likely be limited. Firefox OS will appeal primarily to those looking for budget smartphones as their very first switch from a dumbphone.

In contrast, RIM is established and will go after both everyday consumers and those in the enterprise. In fact, Microsoft and RIM arguably have the same core target audience. So which platform is going to be the greater success? All the major carriers will likely support both platforms, but who get attract more consumer interest?

While it is probably too early to pass judgment, let’s talk about a few possible strengths from each platform:

Windows Phone 8

Microsoft is heavily promoting integration with other Microsoft products in Windows Phone 8. This includes heavy Office integration that appeals to the enterprise, as well as integration with Windows 8.

•     Microsoft has “gamer” appeal with its Xbox Live integration.
•     Microsoft’s Live Tile approach is different and fresh.
•     Windows Phone 8 allows all sorts of languages to be used for app creation and porting (unlike WP7) and  therefore might do better when it comes to attracting big name apps.
•     Microsoft has deep pockets for marketing and is already hitting hard with celebrity endorsements.

If BB10 can provide good apps and a lot of the draw that made these users loyal originally— some of them might return to purchasing Blackberry devices again.

•     Blackberry originally had a reputation for serious business and an elite vibe that it might be able to use as leverage for gaining new fans or winning back old ones.
•     Blackberry will bring its Blackberry Flow approach into the picture, which it touts as a way to improve productivity and brags is a more seemless smartphone experience.

Right now, there isn’t much on BB10′s bullet point. This isn’t necessarily because BB10 doesn’t have some killers features– we just don’t know enough yet. As it stands, RIM needs to give us proof that Blackberry 10 can do things BETTER than alternatives like Windows Phone 8, iOS and Android.

As for Windows Phone? It already has a few advantages over iOS and Android that it can use to gain traction. This includes the perception that it is better for business (whether that’s true is probably debatable), and the integration with Office, Xbox and Windows 8.

It is unlikely that either BB10 or Windows Phone 8 can dethrone iOS and/or Android at this point, but if they play their cards right, one of these new operating systems could establish itself as a solid third place contender.

Discover new music with Google Music Explorer for tablets

Google has introduced a new music discovery feature called Music Explore for the Android tablets.


Google has added a new Explorer feature to its Play Music app. However, it is available for tablets with Android 4.2 as of now.

This Explorer feature is visible only in select countries where the music section exists. So the music section shows the tracks and albums of the artists one can preview. While checking out the albums, you can also explore similar artists using the Explorer feature. These artists will appear based on your current music collection and the ones available in the Google Play store.

Currently, Google Play's Music and Movies section are not accessible in India but we are hopeful that in near future the company may enable that.
