Motorola has announced a high definition version of the Droid RAZR, on the same day that Nokia announced its new Lumia smartphones.
Motorola announced three new devices, the RAZR HD, the RAZR Maxx HD, and the mid-range RAZR M.
The company was recently bought by Google but has been quiet for several months.
The new RAZR HD sports a 4.7-inch screen with a resolution 1,280 x 720 display — about 312 pixels per inch. That is an upgrade from the current Razr, which has a 960 x 540 display.
The phone has a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 processor like the Nokia Lumia 920. Motorola claims that the Razr HD has colour saturation that is 85 per cent better than Apple's iPhone 4S.
It has a better battery life than the Samsung Galaxy S III with about 16 hours of talk time.
The MAXX version boasts 21 hours of talk time, 27 hours of music streaming over LTE and 10 hours of video streaming over LTE
During the launch, the chief executive of Motorola, Dennis Woodside, said that the launch of the new phones and the connection with Google represented the start of the "new Motorola".
The event, in New York, included an appearance by Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google. The phones all use Google's Android operating system.
The RAZR M has a 4.3 inch screen which will offer 40 per cent more screen size than the iPhone 4S. It includes an 8 megapixel camera and 8GB of internal storage
It will sell for $99 and will be released in the United States next week. Release dates and prices for the other two phones have yet to be announced.
Motorola in the UK has suggested that it will be launching a new Intel-powered device in the UK on September 18. There are rumours that this refers to the Droid Razr M arriving in the UK.
